So yesterday, I went to the gym and did a work out that involved doing a back-extension exercise I learned at the physical therapist. It involves laying stomach-first on a Swiss ball and extending your back up (kind of like a reverse crunch). I was feeling good that day, so I did 20 extensions, 10 more than I do at the therapist. Well, I don't know if I did the exercise wrong or what, but for the rest of the day, my middle and upper back were KILLING me! Funny enough, my lower back felt great! I just can't win...at least I got to share my faith with a Montgomery County Fire Department Lieutenant who was at the gym the same time I was, and another guy named Bobby who I see at the gym every now and then. Those million dollar bills are great conversation starters! Teaching the kids chess went pretty well too; we reviewed the king/queen checkmate, and i passed out candy to the quite players. Ahh, the power of bribery. :)
Anyway, my back continued to bother me all last evening and into the night. I had a terrible time sleeping because every time I moved, my back would scream at me, lighting me up with intense pain. It got so bad, I had to call in sick to work; no way I would have been any use to anyone had I gone in to work the way I was feeling. Subsequently, today has been a day of R & R.
My new Netflix movie came in the mail today: "Freedom Writers." Talk about an inspirational flick! It reinforced the power of the written word and having someone who believes in you. It made me appreciate even more the struggles teachers go through to reach their kids, especially kids with a lot of extra problems. Everyone needs someone who believes in them and who will fight for them to the end.
